WELCOME TO LESVOS
Unlike some other Greek islands, it has remained unspoilt by mass tourism, choosing instead to focus on ecotourism in its untouched countryside. This is especially noticeable in the South of the island. It is blessed with award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and description; some busy with activity and water sports others are quiet, or even deserted. Lesvos is an island of two contrasting halves and home to an unrivalled variety of landscapes with dramatic volcanic rocks formations, coastal scenery and lush green forests of pine trees and olive groves. The south east of the island is clad with olive groves (an estimated 12 million olive trees), pine forest and sweet chestnut woodland while the west of the island is of volcanic origin with spectacular landscapes and home to the famous Petrified Forest. It is home to a surprisingly large variety of flowers and a magnet for migrating birds as well as supporting an exciting variety of breeding species.
Colourful coastal fishing villages delight every visitor to this island, but few tourists venture into its fascinating hidden interior. Those who do will find beautiful landscapes of poppy-covered fields, hidden valleys, perfectly preserved hill villages hardly changed for centuries, ancient castles, ruined temples, mediaeval basilicas and colourful fishing harbours with waterfront tavernas serving wonderfully fresh and traditional cuisine. Visitors are enchanted by its traditional charm, tranquillity and hospitality of the locals.
